The Paleo Holiday Challenge is On!

November 5, 2011 Leave a comment Go to comments

Big thanks to Randy for kicking off the CrossFit Everett 60 Day Holiday Paleo challenge this morning and what a great turn out!  Thanks to everyone who made it!  Here are the links to the resources that Randy talked about:

Book

The Paleo Solution: The Original Human Diet  by Robb Wolf.  It’s available as a hardback only at this time for  $14.71, or Kindle version $9.98 – if you don’t have a kindle, you can still download it read it on your desktop or laptop computer with free Kindle software from Amazon.

It’s also available from the iTunes store if you want to read it on your iPad or iTouch for $9.99.

Also available from the Everett Library (there’s a waiting list for it at Everett) as well as Sno Isle Library system.

When Jesse first recommended the book, I thought anything written by a biochemist would probably substitute for a sleeping pill – but Robb is truly funny & engaging and breaks down the concepts of how different foods affect your body, organs and most of all, your energy.  I have not looked at gluten the same way since reading this (and avoid it like the plague!), it’s also helped me to explain to others why what you eat matters so much more than you think.

Web site & Podcasts

Robb Wolf’s web site – www.robbwolf.com where you can sign up for his free newsletter

I seriously recommend his podcasts which you can listen to on your computer or iPod/iTouch/iPhone  (free on iTunes – search the iTunes store for the Paleo solution – listen to them during your commute or when you’re doing those brain-dead things like weeding, folding laundry, walking on your lunch hour or cleaning out the garage!) – he has a wicked sense of humor, cuts to the chase and his show is made up of listener questions so the topics are always changing.

The Latest in Paleo – www.latestinpaleo.com is a web site/blog/podcast from Angelo Coppola, who is the ‘hunter / gatherer’ of all news Paleo.

He has a weekly podcast (listen on your computer or through iTunes – it’s free) where he talks about the latest Paleo news, studies, medical research and promises to entertain; get you fired up about the Paleo lifestyle; informed about the latest Paleo diet news; and to point you in the direction of talented members of the Paleo community

Fish Oil Calculator

has been replaced!  check out the Q&A that replaced it at the Whole 9 web site.

Cooking Paleo

There are more books & web sites devoted to Paleo cooking now than ever before which are great when you’re looking for original ideas (or maybe how to re-make your favorite – like say meatloaf!).

Some of the favorites are:

Every Day Paleo  – Sarah also has a cook book that is oh so pretty and does a great take on updating the ‘classics’ (like meatloaf with almond meal instead of bread crumbs or oatmeal!) and she also has a free podcast on iTunes that focuses on raising healthy kids in the Paleo lifestyle

Elana’s Pantry  – I’m making her butternut apple soup tomorrow!  Just a warning that you have to watch some of her recipes as she hasn’t always been strictly paleo, but she does a lot of paleo too!  I have her almond flour cookbook and everything I’ve tried so far has been a winner – so it’s nice to be able to make cookies or a cake for the potluck, family dinner or friends that you’re able to eat as well.

Fast Paleo – A paleo recipe sharing site, chock full of ideas (salad dressings, chocolate balls, bacon wrapped chicken, yeah …)

Primal Palate – hands down the most beautiful cookbook I’ve seen yet (and I’ve had mine less than a week) – they have a number of recipes on their web site & blog – including turkey stuffing (need I say more?)

and of course, the CFE web page – which features a different food idea / recipe each day on the right hand side of the page – check out the Meal of the Day.

If you have ideas you’d like to share, leave them in the comments section of this post or post them on the CFE Facebook page.

Thanks again to everyone who attended – it was great to see so many of you taking time on a Saturday to listen & challenge yourself!
